A Certain Slant of Light

My Thoughts:
Positives:

* God, this book was good. I was interested throughout the whole thing.
* The romance between the two main characters is gripping. It reminds me of that first pull towards someone that you hope to spend eternity with.
* Interesting take on the living and the dead
* Mixes past and present circumstances, giving life to both with a lot of figurative language that seems literal.

Negatives:

* Drug use, teenage sex, not appropriate for immature readers.
* Abusive families in many extremes makes this a little difficult for the faint of heart.
* Makes religion look REALLY bad. ( )

Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging

My thoughts:
Positives:

* Georgia is hilarious. I mean, she shaved off her eyebrows and went to some guy for kissing lessons without realizing that he was sorta dating her. I love how much these books make me laugh.
* The little glossary in the back of the book to help us understand the British slang is almost funnier then actions in the story. Sometimes I crave the usage of these terms. I want to start saying knickers, etc.
* Angus chases an annoying poodle. Cats are totally not supposed to scare dogs, but it’s quite funny when they do.
* Georgia is a bit troublesome, but endearing in school (just like I was).
* You get to meet all of the crazy characters that show up in the future books. Like my favorite, Sven, the crazy exchange student that ends up being one of the Ace Gang’s boyfriends.

Negatives:

* The Sex God doesn’t sound attractive to me at all.
* I still don’t know what “wet” means when used as an adjective to describe someone (who is dry).
* As Georgia gets older, she doesn’t seem to change that much. I know that as everyone moves through middle school their attitude changes a lot, but hers seems to stay the same. She just seems to understand guys a little differently. ( )

Eighth Grade Bites

My thoughts:
Positives:

* He really reminded me of an average 8th grade boy. He deals with being picked on, hangs out with his friend, and generally dislikes school.
* There is a bit of a mystery to finding out who the killer is throughout the book.
* The setting is fairly elaborate and you get a good look at the town of Bathory.
* There are many references to other famous Dracula type books, including the name of the town
* It’s a quick read.

Negatives:

* There really isn’t much that is gripping. I never felt like I had to keep guessing what was going to happen
* The characters are not developed well. I’m not sure if I should care about any of the dead people, the substitute teacher, or Vlad for that matter. I really only understood the character because I work with boys his age. There was no real description given and very little emotion involved.
* I still have no idea what the point of the symbols are or what they mean. Why add them in if they are just to annoy the main character. ( )

Physik

My thoughts:
Positives:

* Lots of adventure that keeps you moving from beginning to end
* Alchemy, time travel, magic, but always in a believable way.
* The enemy of the main character is reminiscent of the Queen of Hearts (one of my favorite villains)
* Septimus Heap is likable, intelligent, and generally a very well described character. I always care about what happens to him and his family members
* Marcellus Pye is interesting and makes me think about what eternal life might end up being like.
* There are moments when this book had me laughing out loud and being embarrassed by the odd stares I got from doing so.

Negatives:

* You have to read the first two in order to understand this book.
* There is mention of Simon, but he does not really have a part in the book. I wonder why they keep mentioning him if they won’t let the reader know what happened to him.
* There is little worth to the amount of things in this novel. I’m not sure what is considered wealthy and what is not.
* I wish there was more of a description of Queen Etheldredda other than she always looked upset. I’m sure that there could have been some metaphors and similes that could have brought her into the forefront better. ( )

Hello world!

This is my first time having a blog, so please bare with me. I’m starting this under the encouragement of those that I have been in LibraryThing with. I appreciate people believing that others would actually want to read my opinions. When I get more involved in this, I’m sure I’ll be able to separate my reviews and my writing, but for now. Please just deal with me. Thanks!
