Mailbox Monday/In My Mailbox

Ok, so these two memes are basically the same thing, so I decided that I would post late on Sunday and just include them both together.  “Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.”  This meme is brought to you by The Printed Page.  In my mailbox is brought to you by The Story Siren.  “The idea behind IMM was not only to put new books on your radar but to also encourage blogger interaction.  IMM explores the weekly contents of my mailbox & books bought. And sometimes other fun goodies.”

So, this was what I got in the actual mail this week.  It’s only two books, which is actually light for me, but I didn’t get mail on Saturday (did I miss a holiday?) so I am expecting a large collection coming in on Monday afternoon.

The first book that I received was through paperbackswap.com, and it was Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger.  Here is BN.com’s summary:

Since his parents’ divorce, John’s mother hasn’t touched him, her new fiancé wants them to move away, and his father would rather be anywhere than at Friday night dinner with his son. It’s no wonder John writes articles like “Interview with the Stepfather” and “Memoirs from Hell.” The only release he finds is in homemade zines like the amazing Escape Velocity by Marisol, a self-proclaimed “Puerto Rican Cuban Yankee Lesbian.” Haning around the Boston Tower Records for the new issue of Escape Velocity, John meets Marisol and a hard love is born.

While at first their friendship is based on zines, dysfuntional families, and dreams of escape, soon both John and Marisol begin to shed their protective shells. Unfortunately, John mistakes this growing intimacy for love, and a disastrous date to his junior prom leaves that friendship in ruins. Desperately hoping to fix things, John convinces Marisol to come with him to a zine conference on Cape Cod. On the sandy beaches by the Bluefish Wharf Inn, John realizes just how hard love can be.

With keen insight into teenage life, Ellen Wittlinger delivers a story of adolescence that is fierce and funny — and ultimately transforming — even as it explores the pain of growing up.

The second book that I got was from Around the World Tours.  It’s Numbers by Rachel Ward.  I’ve started this one already, so look for a review by the middle of the week. Here is the BN.com summary:  Ever since she was child, Jem has kept a secret: Whenever she meets someone new, no matter who, as soon as she looks into their eyes, a number pops into her head. That number is a date: the date they will die. Burdened with such awful awareness, Jem avoids relationships. Until she meets Spider, another outsider, and takes a chance. The two plan a trip to the city. But while waiting to ride the Eye ferris wheel, Jem is terrified to see that all the other tourists in line flash the same number. Today’s number. Today’s date. Terrorists are going to attack London. Jem’s world is about to explode!
Okay, so that was what came into my mailbox.  Everything else that I got this week went straight into my iPod.  Audible.com has their semi-annual audiobook sale and I sort of went shopaholic crazy and bought 38 audiobooks.  Yes, I’m serious.  I bought 38 audiobooks.  My husband said that it was okay as long as I promised to use them as school textbooks as well as for my joy of listening to audiobooks instead of music on my long commute.  So, lucky for me that I am designing my curriculum for this course, I agreed and decided to just sort of freak out.  There are 38 of them, so you only get the pictures. -smooches-

  1. Ok, yeah totally jealous! Though I have listened to some of those from my library. Wicked Lovely, A Quick Bite, Once Dead Twice Shy, and Evermore are all ones I’ve listened too. I’ve read Moon Called, The Vampire Diaries, and A Kiss of Shadows. Rogue and Sunshine are sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. The other ones…I want! LOL Fabulous bunch of books!

    • Thank you. I told you as I was buying them that I was going a bit overboard. The bad thing is that when not on Spring Break, I spend about 3 hours in the car a day, so I will get through all of them before the school year is over.

  2. WOW! talk about a week in books! Some great stuff you picked up, that’s for sure! Looking forward to the reviews!

    Happy reading and listening.
    -Lisa

    • Thank you. I need to figure out what order I’m going to listen to them in, or if I’m just going to let my iPod decide for me.

  3. What great audiobooks!

  4. 38 AUDIOBOOKS?!?!?!?!? OH MY GOODNESS. I just started listening to an audiobook – my very first one! I need tips for when I’m listening to them – I don’t feel like I’m comprehending what I’m hearing sometimes 😦

    • You know, I have actually written essays off of audiobooks. I think that for the most part, the more you listen to them, the easier it is to pick out points from the book that you would end up writing down as a note. There are other books that I don’t understand every part of until I sit and think over what I have listened to. It took me a little bit to really get into audiobooks because I am a visual person, but once I did, I was completely hooked.

  5. Enjoy your books. I received one last week.

    • There have been so many weeks that I receive one book. Sometimes those are the best weeks because then I get to read that one and start to go through my TBR list.

  6. Oh my gosh, what a fun shopping spree! I hope you enjoy all of your new treasures!

    • It was so much fun. I think I went a little crazy though. Someone has the book shopaholic as their twitter name, and I think that I have definitely joined that club.

  7. I am so jealous… : ) Those are some really great books you have there. Numbers look super interesting. I hope you enjoy all of them. I’ll look out for your reviews. Here’s my loot:http://bookventuresbookclub.blogspot.com/2010/04/mailbox-mondays.html

    Happy reading!!

    • Numbers is so interesting. I’m about halfway through it right now and am struggling to put it down inbetween classes. It’s so thrilling and I can’t wait to find out how Jem solves her problems.

  8. Thanks for the heads-up on the Audible sale- I will stop by there later today! I need some audiobooks for my walk to work!

Enjoy all your listening this weeks!

    • The audible.com emails are usually the first ones that I open. I’m happy to share the sales though. I hope you find some great buys. I think that I didn’t spend more than $12 on a single audiobook. That is so much better than if you buy it from a bookstore.

  9. Hard Love sounds quite emotional. Is it YA?
And WOW what a sale! Happy listening 🙂

    • Hard Love is a YA book, but for older teens. I was playing around on LibraryThing and it was recommended for GLBA students. I wanted to give it a shot because I want my library to be more inclusive.

  10. Oh I forgot to list my audio books in my post. Your books look good. I only got two extra. Happy Reading and listening

    • I’m not sure that I would have listed my audiobooks except this week there was a big influx into my iPod, so I figured it was important for me to celebrate it. What audiobooks did you get?

  11. Haha love it!!! Happy reading/listening! 🙂 My mailbox is at The Crowded Leaf.

  12. That must have been fun picking out all those audiobooks! You have a lot of great titles to listen to. Enjoy them all!

    • It was very fun picking out all of the audiobooks. I had my wishlist open on one page and then the sale pages open on another and I was happily clicking along. I tried not to look at the total or anything else until I was through the 1000+ that were on sale.

  13. The audiobook of Middlesex is fantastic!

Here is mine on Rose City Reader.

    Happy reading!

    • Middlesex has been a book that has gone on and off my TBR pile so many times that I forgot if I owned it. I had to look through my library to make sure that I had not purchased it before I bought it. I hate it when I end up with two copies of the same audiobook because then what do you do with it?

  14. Oh. Em. Gee. This is a squee-worthy haul! I was licking my lips looking at al these titles. So many of them are books I love, or books that I have lying around that I really want to read. Enjoy all your books! I’m sure your students are loving you right now. 😉

    • I wish they loved me just when I bought a whole bunch of new books. They see my TBR shelves growing and think that they are going to go shopping themselves. At least for the most part they enjoy reading what I enjoy reading.
